A patient is considered “pre-diabetic” when their blood sugar is higher than normal, but not quite at the level to be considered diabetic. Fortunately, a change in lifestyle, including healthier eating, exercise and weight loss, may be all that is necessary to prevent the development of diabetes. It is important that patients follow up with their primary care doctor for monitoring and accountability, says Bethany Panchal, MD, a Family Medicine physician with Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. One test used for screening is the Hemoglobin A1C, which provides an average of blood sugar levels over a 3-4 month time period. Monitoring for pre-diabetes and diabetes is particularly important when there are high risk factors such as a family history of the disease or when the patient is overweight or has a poor diet high in carbohydrates and sugars. In addition, those who are Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Native Alaskan or Native American are at higher risk for diabetes.
