UAB trial to test promising new treatment approach for diabetes

Anath Shalev, MD, director of the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center, explains the “repurposing of verapamil as a beta cell survival therapy in type 1 diabetes” trial, which will test an approach different from any current diabetes treatment. The trial is based on Shalev’s research showing that verapamil, a common blood pressure drug, reverses diabetes in animal models.
