Insulin is a peptide hormone that is created by beta cells in the pancreas, specifically in the islets of langerhan. Insulin puts sugar and potassium into the cell, which causes hypoglycemia, a reduction of blood serum sugar. The pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes is where the body destroys the beta cells in the pancreas leading to no insulin production, and type 2 diabetes the body becomes insulin resistant due to over production of insulin, typically due to a diet with a high glycemic index (high in simple sugars).

In this video Mike Linares RN breaks down a complete NCLEX review of the various types of insulin, including mnemonic & memory tricks on how to remember insulin peak times, onset, and duration of:
– Rapid acting insulin: Lispro insulin, Aspart insulin, Glulisine insulin (brand names: Humalog, Novolog, Apidra)
– Short acting insulin: Regular Insulin (Humulin, Acrapid, Novolin)
– Intermediate acting insulin: NPH, Lente
– Long acting insulin: Glargine insulin, Detemir insulin (brand names: Lantus, Levemir)
