Flashback Friday: What Causes Insulin Resistance and Diabetes?

Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are caused by a drop in insulin sensitivity blamed on “intramyocellular lipid,” the buildup of fat inside our muscle cells. Saturated fat can be toxic to the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, explaining why animal fat consumption can impair insulin secretion, not just insulin sensitivity.

This was the first of a three-part video series on the cause of type 2 diabetes, so as to better understand dietary interventions to prevent and treat the epidemic. The follow-up videos are The Spillover Effect Links Obesity to Diabetes (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-spillover-effect-links-obesity-to-diabetes), in which I talk about how that fat can come either from our diet or excess fat stores; and Lipotoxicity: How Saturated Fat Raises Blood Sugar (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/lipotoxicity-how-saturated-fat-raises-blood-sugar), where I show how not all fats are equally to blame.

I mentioned low-carb diets in the video. For more on their potential health effects, see videos like Low-Carb Diets and Coronary Blood Flow (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/low-carb-diets-and-coronary-blood-flow).

What is normal sugar level by age?

Much relief after going through this stuff https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugkx-ip-9JdKgYMhubLnEjt3OXJkFyS4D2Jd Stress no doubt affects my blood sugar levels. Taking a walk usually help bring them down. Eating sweets is not my favorite, but if i take a large portion of them, my blood sugar level rises high. I think it's the high concentration of the glucose flowing into the bloodstream all at once. This is a lesson worth taking note of. This is a great material to learn from.

All fats cause high blood sugar or just saturated fat?

  5. Aaron Cadam Samuels

I would really love to hear a debate with other leading doctors (notably Dr. Malhotra, another hero of mine) who continue to assert that carbs cause T2D and insulin resistance. Can anyone point me in that direction? Cheers!

So is body fat saturated or unsaturated? What happens when our body starts releasing our own body fat- can that clog up the cells receptors? I'm confused.

My family has a history of diabetes. My father has type 2 diabetes and had angioplasty last year. I have been very persistent on being informative on this matter, not only for my father, but for me. I tried gluconize to track my intakes and physical activities, and the results are excellent. I also lost 4lbs since I am overweight for my age.

How is this not common knowledge if the mechanisms to cause type 2 diabetes has become so clear? It's amazing how many times I've heard people say type 2 is caused by eating too much sugar. I've even heard people say too much fruit is bad because of this! Longevity guru Peter Attia dedicated much of his career into trying to solve this epidemic but I have never heard him emphasize saturated fat as a cause.

Information that is beneficial to all is worth more than gold. Nutrition and exercise are the cure of all illness caused by food.

  16. Ade Larsen

"Genetic component to type 2 diabetes". LOL

This information has been totally debunked. It's wrong and false. This video is going to keep people over weight with type 2 diabetes getting worse.

Talking about palmitic acid. Its not highest in animal fat. Its highest in palm oil. I think palm oil should be blacklisted as the world's unhealthiest fat.
